Houllier in Villa learning curve

New manager Gerard Houllier Aston Villa will have little difficulty, settling in when he assumes control, in accordance with the interim Chief Kevin MacDonald.

Contractual matters with the French Football Federation delayed arrival of Houllier and MacDonald is responsible for Saturday's game with Bolton.

But the Scottish revealed: "we really have spoken to two or three times per day on a variety of things.

"I even talked to him after Thursday reservations-Manchester United win."

Former head of Liverpool Houllier will assist game Saturday booths but be on the hot seat for Carling Cup tie Wednesday against Blackburn.

MacDonald said: "we talk about [2-1] defeat on Monday [in Stoke] and in particular players because, obviously, he's trying to get up to speed with them very, very quickly.

"We talk about what happened [in Stoke] and your thoughts are not ones that like to disclose.

"Of course, he was disappointed, as we all were because we feel our performance deserved better than what we have, but in the end, we didn't get anything."

MacDonald confirmed that, despite the presence of Houllier on Saturday, he has sole authority on team selection and tactics.

"In time and again spoke with him this morning, said he would only let me get started with it and then it will start later," said MacDonald.

"He hasn't felt it would be wrong to come and talk with the players to undermine what I was trying to do, although he can say something later.

"But he told me to go ahead with it, to take decisions, which is very fair it".

MacDonald rejected the opportunity to become Assistant Houllier and instead will revert to his former role as Team Manager.

"For me, has been an invaluable experience. I enjoyed my time I now head back to the reservation and try and push that some guys more forward to the first team," commented on McDonald 's.

"Will also re-evaluate long-term what I do, but I hope I'll be working on Aston Villa in the foreseeable future".
